Fuzzy Business
By
Amelia Ritner
Blurb:
In the near future, America is slowly becoming populated with a new minority: men and women who, at their parents' behest, were genetically altered in the womb to exhibit the appearance of anthropomorphic animals. Miara is a humanimal, a woman just like anyone else, except with feline features and some feline abilities. She accidentally witnesses a murder in the San Francisco Bay Area, and is subsequently kidnapped by the man she sees fleeing the scene. She is then forced to help him find a way to prove his innocence, but he couldn't possibly be telling the truth... could he?
Excerpt:
“I’m
not here to hurt you. I need you to trust me on that,” he continued, still not
looking directly at me.
I tried to bite his hand. He
winced, and squeezed my cheeks viciously, emitting a low growl of warning.
My eyes must have been as wide as
saucers. I trembled with uncertain fear, and looked away when he stared at me.
I still couldn’t see his eyes, but I could feel him looking at me, assessing
the danger of letting my mouth go.
“I
need your help,” he said slowly. Then he took his hand off my mouth, though he
still held me tightly with his other arm. He used his now free hand to remove
the sunglasses. He squinted for a moment in the light, but the sun was on its
way down and did not bother him long.
Just as I took another breath in
preparation to scream, he said, “Please don’t! I’m innocent. I didn’t kill that
man. I need your help.”
